What if we took a picture of Disruption?
Every year, the city of Arles in southern France gives us a photography festival featuring some of the world’s best artists (see the catalogue below). For the 40th anniversary of the legendary festival, the director Nan Goldin chose to celebrate it under the sign of Disruption! It’s very funny to note that this term—which in French originally refers to a power breakdown, and in English, has a negative connotation—has been revived. Could this be linked to Jean-Marie Dru’s appropriation of this term in 1993? The term “disruption” now is often used to show a breaking away, a rebirth and positive changes. This has also become a mantra for the American management guru, Tom Peters.
